Trivia:
Pakistani poet and writer Fatima Bhutto had called the film 'a servile pantomime of partition'.

This is the first film to be released in British cinemas (different screens and different film prints) in two languages: English and Hindi.

Om Puri played Nahari in Gandhi (1982), which also deals with the partition and Indian independence.

The film is based on the books Freedom at Midnight by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre, and The Shadow of the Great Game: The Untold Story of Partition by Narendra Singh Sarila.
