American treasure-seeker Brock Lovett and his team retrieve artifacts from the submerged RMS Titanic. Lovett looks for diamonds but finds a drawing of a young woman, nude except for a necklace. When 102-year-old Rose reveals she's the person in the portrait, she is summoned to the wreckage site to tell her story. 17-year-old first-class passenger Rose DeWitt Bukater, her fiancé Cal Hockley, and her mother Ruth board the luxurious Titanic in 1912 Southampton. Ruth emphasizes that Rose's marriage will resolve their family's financial problems and retain their high-class persona. Rose, however, finds herself drawn towards Jack Dawson, a penniless artist. As their romance blossoms, the ship heads towards impending danger.
