Trivia:
When the film was released in the 4DX motion-enhanced theater in Los Angeles, there were SpongeBob-themed seats to commemorate with the film's format release.

This sequel was announced almost ten years after The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004).

The sequel was originally going to be released in late 2014, but the date was officially announced by Paramount Pictures although that planned release date was March 27th, 2015. The film eventually ended up being released on February 6th, 2015.

Peter Shukoff (NicePeter) and Lloyd Ahlquist (EpicLloyd) from Epic Rap Battles of History on YouTube made a cameo as two bald surfers. They also voice the seagulls during the rap battle segment of the film, during which NicePeter also voices Painty the Pirate.

Tim Conway, who voices one of the Seagulls in the movie, does the voice of Barnacle Boy in SpongeBob SquarePants (1999).

Most of the characters broke fourth wall throughout the film, one of them including a minor character stating all secondary characters to go back to the corrupt style of Bikini Bottom and let the main characters keep going up above.

The movie, like it's predecessor, features music sung by the actors themselves.

Spongebob's old work out equipment (stuffed animals) can be seen in the background of his house.

The infamous "My leg!" running joke from the series makes a return in this film when Mr. Krabs throws the top of the stone Krabby Patty away.

Bubbles the magic dolphin is completely made from stop-motion.

SpongeBob's superhero alter ego is the Invincibubble, Patrick's is Mr. Superaweseomness, Squidward's is Sour Note, Mr. Krabs' is Sir Pinch-a-Lot, Sandy's is The Rodent, and Planton's is Plank-Ton.

Like its predecessor, this film contained live-action footage.

The show's staff from seasons 1-3 return to work for this movie, especially creator (Stephen Hillenburg who has now returned to SpongeBob full time after leaving the show after the first movie (although he still reviewed episodes and gave suggestions). It was announced by Paul Tibbitt in December 2014 that Hillenberg will work on the show's upcoming 10th season.

Dedicated to memory of Ernest Borgnine (1917-2012), who voiced Mermaid Man in SpongeBob SquarePants (1999).

Is the first Nickelodeon film to get a sequel that is not based on Rugrats (1990).

Squidward inking was originally supposed to be a common element of his character in the show. However, the writers could not come up with a way to make it seem comical, so this was eventually scrapped.

This is the first Hollywood-studio animated film to use hand-drawn animation, since the release of Winnie the Pooh (2011).

This will be the first Nickelodeon film to get a sequel that is not based on Rugrats.

It was originally going to be released in late-2014, but the date was officially announced by Paramount Pictures that this film is now set to be released on February 13, 2015.

Like its predecessor, this film will contain live-action footage.
