The film is based on the 1964 novel The Perfect Murder by British crime fiction writer HRF Keating.
Inspector Ghote's name (pronounced Go-tay) is a joke, a reference to something usually attributed to George Bernard Shaw and his war against the English Language. An earlier spelling reformer proposed that the word "fish" could, using the ridiculous rules of the English language, be spelled "ghoti". "Gh" as in enough, "o" as in women, and "ti" as in nation. It can also be a completely silent word.
Writer H. R. F. Keating makes a cameo appearance in the film.
Naseeruddin Shah's real-life son Imaaduddin plays his son in the film.
