Kaleb, a beautiful German Shepherd, is taken away from his Jewish family and his beloved ten year old master Joshua when the Nuremberg Laws are enacted forbidding Jews to own pets. We then follow the trajectory of the dog as he navigates his way through WW2 Berlin. Captured by an SS Officer, Kaleb is trained to attack and round up Jews at a Nazi work camp. The dog is well cared for and good at his job until one day he is distracted by a familiar scent; Joshua has arrived as a captive at the camp. Joshua finds solace in secretly visiting Kaleb at night until together the boy and his dog escape into the forest, dependent on each other to survive.
