Set against the backdrop of India in the early 20th century, while the country was still under the tyranny of British rule, this daring drama revolves around the fluctuating fortunes of Raja Azad Singh and his family. The immensely valiant and strong Raja stands up defiantly against British soldiers. When his wife Rani Durga gives birth to a baby boy, he carves the word Mard on his chest, to convey strength and fearlessness. However, the British along with Harry, a greedy Indian doctor, conspire against the Raja; they imprison him and have him thrown in the dungeon. The Rani escapes with the Prince, but fate separates them. The Prince ends up in an orphanage, from where he is adopted by a blacksmith and his wife. The couple bring him up with great love, and he grows up into Raju, a strong and confident young man. The deceitful Harry has been richly rewarded for his betrayal, and is now the Mayor of the Raja's kingdom. The twist in the tale occurs when his vivacious daughter falls in love with the daring Raju, sparking a complex sequence of events that will bring Raju face to face with his past and on collision course with Harry and the British rulers. Will Raju succeed in uniting his scattered family?

Trivia:
A bulk of the shooting for this movie took place in Ooty (near a golf links site belonging to Hindusthan Photo Films) and various locations in Karnataka, such as the Lalitha Mahal in Mysore and the Bangalore Palace.

Dimple Kapadia was offered the role of Ruby, but quoted too high a price. She was replaced by Amrita Singh.

The film has a scene where Amitabh Bachchan is buried in the sand. When the shooting took a break for rest, Amitabh refused to come out of the sand saying that if he came out and went back again, the shot wouldn't look natural.

This was the last blockbuster from an Amitabh Bachchan and Manmohan Desai collaboration.
