Based on the character created by bestselling author Tom Clancy, 'Jack Ryan' is a global action thriller set in the present day. This original story follow a young Jack (Chris Pine) as he uncovers a financial terrorist plot. The story follows him from 9/11, through his tour of duty in Afghanistan, which scarred him forever, and into his early days in the Financial Intelligence Unit of the modern CIA where he becomes an analyst, under the guardianship of his handler, Harper (Kevin Costner). Trivia:
Costner has always wanted to work with Kenneth Branagh.

Some of the film was shot in Liverpool, because it used to be a major trade hub, and it had some of the imperial look Branagh was looking for. They did some of their shooting in London for “big city DNA and architecture,” and to get some imperial architecture in the film that doesn’t exist in Moscow anymore. Most of the film has been shot in London. Only a minimal amount has been shot in New York.

It was both a reward and challenge to create a hero who is much like any common man, whose only weapon is his brain, according to the creators of the movie.

Pine broke his finger on the set when trying to tackle a character on the set.

The film is rooted in Jack Ryan’s post-war stress, and the United States in a post-9/11 era.

It has been noted that Kenneth Branagh is an actor-focused director, who isn’t afraid to put an emphasis on the actors and talk with them on set.

Neufeld has been trying to reboot the franchise since 'The Sum of All Fears', and he said that Branagh’s interest in directing the film got the film a green light.

Kenneth Branagh read every Tom Clancy book on Jack Ryan and saw all of the films as part of preparation for the film.

Haris Zambarloukos, the Director of Photography, is a huge fan of film, so the movie is shot in about an 80 to 20 ratio of film to digital. The digital filming is being shot with Red.

Tom Clancy's last film as a writer before his death on October 1, 2013.

Kevin Costner was actually the first actor offered the role of Jack Ryan in The Hunt for Red October (1990), which was the character's first film appearance, but turned it down to make Dances with Wolves (1990) instead.

After having played British, German, Australian, and American characters in his career, this is the first time that Kenneth Branagh has played a Russian character.

First film in the franchise that isn't based on a specific novel in the Jack Ryan book series.

Kevin Costner previously appeared in Field of Dreams (1989), which was directed by Phil Alden Robinson and featured Ben Affleck as an extra, and James Earl Jones (Adm. Greer) in a supporting role. Robinson and Affleck worked together again years later in The Sum of All Fears (2002).

The original screenplay written by Adam Cozad was entitled "Dubai" and was intended to be an action film starring Eric Bana. Paramount later asked Cozad to rewrite his old script and to change the lead character to Jack Ryan.

Keira Knightley, Felicity Jones, Evangeline Lilly, Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel were considered to play Cathy Ryan, Jack Ryan's wife. Knightley was the early front runner and she ended up being cast.

Colm Feore had a supporting role in The Sum of All Fears (2002), the previous reboot of the Jack Ryan franchise starring Ben Affleck. He'd also played a main villain in Kenneth Branagh's Thor (2011).

Jack Bender was originally attached to direct this film until he was replaced by Kenneth Branagh due to his commitment to work for another project.

Chris Pine appeared with previous Jack Ryan actor Ben Affleck in Smokin' Aces (2006). Affleck in turn worked with predecessor Alec Baldwin in Pearl Harbor (2001), and Baldwin appeared in Working Girl (1988) with his other successor Harrison Ford. Pine and Baldwin also worked together in Rise of the Guardians (2012).
