Under the leadership of underworld Don Aslam Bhai (Madan Joshi) flourishes a criminal empire in Bombay. This riveting crime thriller follows the trials and triumphs in his life and the battle that erupts between his close associates to take over his empire. His close associates are Mallik (Ajay Devgan) and Chandrakant alias Chandu (Vivek Oberoi). Awaiting the right opportunity, Mallik and Chandu take over from Aslam, and become the two heads of his criminal empire. Times change, and the two also decide to change with the times, and legitimize their empire to a very large extent and call it "Company". Differences arise between easy-going and emotional Chandu and the technical and matter of fact Mallik. A lot of misunderstandings develop between once very good friends, Chandu loses ground and face. He decides to take matters in his own hand and set things right. He breaks away from the gang, and as a result a war results between those loyal to him on one side, and those loyal to Mallik, on the other. Mallik's forces. When Chandu stands on the verge of losing the turf war, he must decide if he should compromise with Mallik or embark on a new journey towards redemption.

After Sayeed and Anees, When Malik and Chandu goes to Sharma's place, they see Rathod (inspector who beat up Chandu) collecting cash from Sharma. Before Sharma receives call on his phone, if you notice in the back ground there is no Beer Bottle.

Malayalam film actor Mohanlal's first Hindi movie. Actor 'Vivek Oberoi''s debut movie.

Ram Gopal Varma wanted to do a film with actor Mohanlal. As a fan of Lal, when the part of police officer Srinivasan came along, Varma initially approached him to do the part.

The theme music played throughout the movie is also used in Ram Gopal's later Sarkaar and Sarkaar Raaj. All three movies are based on parallel governments running in Mumbai.

Ajay Devgan in his later Once upon a time in Mumbai, again played a character based on Dawood Ebrahim.

Story loosely based on the rift between real life dons Dawood Ibrahim and his protege Chhota Rajan. Mohanlal's character based on Real Life Police Commisioner of Bombay Dhanushkodi Sivanandan.

"Vivek Oberoi" is wearing special makeup in the film which makes his complexion several shades darker than it really is.

Ram Gopal Varma once admitted in a interview that he was inspired by the 1980 release Kalyug starring Shashi Kapoor & Rekha.

Rinke Khanna was the original choice for Saroja.

Ram Gopal Varma originally wanted to make a crime themed film with newcomers, at that time he had a meeting with actor Ajay Devgn, his strong and silent personality really moved Ram Gopal Varma, which made him to cast Ajay as an underworld don and initiated the story thread for this movie.
