An up and coming model and actress Mala, is excited when she sees her pictures on a magazine cover. However, the display of fame has the opposite effect on her parents, who immediately fix her wedding with an appropriate groom, much to her dismay. To add to her woes, Mala inadvertently becomes the witness of a murder, and is being hunted by criminals hellbent on disposing of the witness. On the run to save her life, Mala embarks on a bus journey from Bombay to Goa. She encounters many experiences along the journey with people from varied cultures, religions and segments of society. Will she succeed in escaping the dangers that relentlessly hunt her? Who will come to her rescue?

The film is a remake of the Tamil movie Madras to Pondicherry (1966).

As a tribute to Rajesh Khanna, the driver and the conductor were named Rajesh and Khanna respectively.
