Shankar lives a poor lifestyle along with his wife, Sheela, an ardent devotee of Devi Maa Vaibhavlakshmi, and younger brother, Sanjay. He takes a loan from the Village Patil, Subhan Rao, so that Sanjay could go abroad, study, and become a doctor. Subhan loans him Fifteen Lakh Rupees which is to be repaid with interest, and on the condition that Sanjay gets married to his daughter, Gauri, to which Shankar agrees. But when Sanjay returns, he informs them that he has fallen in love with wealthy Naina. Shankar informs an enraged Subhan, and permits Sanjay to get married to Naina. Naina moves in with them, and at first they share a harmonious lifestyle. This idyllic lifestyle is soon shattered after Naina finds they are broke, arguments ensue, and Sanjay decides to refuse to assist his brother in repaying any loan, and moves out to live with his in-laws. Subsequently, Shankar and Sheela lose their house, while in the city Sanjay goes insane, thereby eliminating any hope of reconciliation within this family.
