Natalie Portman was initially pursued for the role of Gail Harris.

Kevin Spacey was originally considered for the role of J. Paul Getty, but after several sexual assault allegations were placed against him. The role was recast with Christopher Plummer, who was Scott's original choice for the role.

When the project was in development Angelina Jolie was offered the lead female role of Gail Harris, the mother of John Paul Getty III, but declined.

Christopher Plummer portrays the grandfather of a character played by Charlie Plummer but the two are, however, not related.

Actor Gary Oldman was also considered for the role of J. Paul Getty.
