The real life story of the warrior queen, Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi. She goes down in history to fight against the British and participate in the first war for Independence. The 22-year-old queen refused to cede Jhansi to the British. She dressed like a man, fought a fierce battle and was killed in combat. This movie is a Homage to her courage and prowess.

Kangana Ranaut insisted on removing actor Sonu Sood and he was replaced by actor Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, which forced the team to re-shoot his portions.
Kangana had directed some of the scenes in the movies herself which makes 'Manikarnika' her directorial debut, as both Krish and Kangana shared the directorial credit.
Kangana Ranaut was accused of editing out major parts of many actors which were shot by director Krrish including part of Atul Kulkarni. But actress Ankita Lokande had denied the accusations.
